Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is all set to introduce gigabit-capable passive optical network (G-pon) in Pune that will enable faster broadband connectivity to its customers. The testing of the system has already been carried out and it will be commissioned within six months.

Principal general manager of BSNL Pune, VK Mahendra, said G-pon technology uses optical cables that can be enabled to provide high speed broadband connection to multiple homes in high-rise buildings.

“It uses passive splitters in the fiber distribution network, enabling one single feeding fiber to provide connection directly to the router. The equipment and infrastructure are already in place and we have tested the technology in Pune,’ he said.

He said the telecom scenario is changing and going by the current trend the paradigm shift would be from voice to data. “Our data service is in high demand and our wired connection is driven by the broadband connections. There are around four lakh landline customers in Pune circle,” he said.

Mahendra said the demand for higher bandwidth is growing among educational institutions and industries in the city. “We recently provided one GB bandwidth for four academic institutes — DY Patil University, College of Engineering Pune, Bharati Vidyapeeth and Sinhgad Institute. We have the latest system in place to provide the required high bandwidth,’ he said.

Five years ago, the demand for such bandwidth was unheard of, but now knowledge dissemination being high priority, the requirement has also grown.

BSNL is also ready with the Wimax technology that would allow the telecom provider to give broadband wireless service without roaming in rural areas. “The technology is ready with us and we will commission it soon,’ he added.

Regarding the customer base, Mahendra said Pune has 1.50 lakh wired internet connections and BSNL was unable to provide connection requirement of another one lakh due to the exorbitant royalty charges levied by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

“They are charging us Rs4,500 per metre while they are allowing the power utility to lay cables for Rs1,500. This means for laying Rs30,000 worth cable per km we have to pay Rs70 lakh. This is a huge amount  and guardian minister Ajit Pawar has assured us that he would look into the issue. The Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations should change their policy,’ he said.
