Continuing with their killing spree, the Maoists on Wednesday executed two civilians in Bhamragarh tehsil of Gadchiroli, the police said on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Ramdas Kunjami of Kiyar village, and Joranna Kudiyami of the neighbouring Halve village, both in their mid thirties.
Based on the accounts of the villagers, the police believed that the CPI (Maoists) Bhamargarh dalam commander Vanaja had executed both the adivasi villagers.
Sources in Gadchiroli police said the Maoists had entrusted Kunjami in 2007 with the responsibility of taking one of their sick dalam members, Vasantha, to Wardha for treatment. He was handed Rs 40,000 for her treatment, which he had allegedly siphoned off, and subsequently a tip off to the police led to Vasantha’s arrest in Wardha, sources said. The Maoists had been after Kunjami ever since.
Sources said the armed Maoists caught hold of Kunjami at his home in Kiyar Wednesday evening and asked his wife to forget about him. His body was found lying on a road on Thursday morning. About 250 metres away lay the body of Joranna Kudiyami. The reason for the Maoist killing him is unclear. Sources in the police though said Kudiyami was in fact working for the Maoists as a courier.
Meanwhile, in north Gadchiroli, the Maoists made an unsuccessful bid to blow a bridge on Kurkheda-Korchi road with the help of gas cylinders in the wee hours of Wednesday. The police said the Maoists had blocked the traffic on Wednesday night, and used six cylinders to blow off the bridge, but could not succeed.

There are reports that the Maoists bought 11 cylinders from a nearby village, but used only six at this spot. The police suspect they might make another sabotage bid with the remaining five cylinders.
