Union petroleum minister Murli Deora said he has fast-tracked the process of awarding petrol pump dealerships to families of six security personnel killed in the 26/11 terror strike.

The government expects to overcome procedural bottlenecks such as acquiring of land and obtaining environmental clearances soon, the petroleum minister said.

"I spoke to Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan and he has already cleared the file regarding land issues. There are some clearances pending from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, which the state government is looking into," Deora said here.

Deora said he expects to hand over a Mahanagar Gas CNG station each to the widows of encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and constable Tukaram Ombale by next month-end.

Union home minister P Chidambaram last week awarded petrol pumps and domestic LPG dealerships to dependents of five policemen who were killed in the line of duty, keeping with the government's commitment to give them financial aid.

While families of four policemen were already alloted petrol pumps early this year, eight more, including Smita Salaskar, wife of Vijay Salaskar, have been waiting since.

"(UPA chairperson) Sonia Gandhi personally called to tell me that we must do everything possible to help families of the 18 martyrs. We are making every effort to ensure that they are looked after well," he said.

"We have obtained BEST land for the families of Vijay Salaskar and Tukaram Ombale. Work is in progress and we expect to hand it over by December-end," Deora said.

Letters of appointment of dealerships of operational petrol pumps were given last week to Vinita Ashok Kamte (wife of late Ashok Marutrao Kamte) at Pune, Shraddha V Khandekar (wife of late Vijay Madhukar Khandekar) at Pune and Pratibha J Patil (wife of late Jaywant Hanumant Patil) at Kikwe, Satara.

Appointment letter was also given to Madhavi P More (wife of late Prakash Pandurang More) for an LPG distributorship at Khargar, Navi Mumbai, while another letter of appointment was handed over to Vineeta Singh, wife of NSG commando late Gajendra Singh for a petrol pump at Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

Under the special initiative for rehabilitation by providing a recurring source of income to families of victims of 26/11 terror attack, Deora said his ministry had decided to allot 18 dealerships of petrol/diesel, LPG and CNG.

Of these 18 beneficiaries, the parents of NSG Commando Sandeep Unnikrishnan declined the government's offer.

Deora said the Government of India in general and his Ministry in particular has been at the forefront of providing relief and rehabilitation to the martyrs' families.

He had personally directed the chiefs of various PSUs to monitor progress of commissioning the outlets in various parts of the country as allotment of land poses a great challenge in speedy commissioning, Deora said.
