A murder convict lodged at Yerawada open jail escaped from the prison on Thursday evening. The jail authorities came to know about the escape during the routine headcount at 6 pm.

A sentry, Sahadu Baburao Wadekar, has lodged a complaint with the
Yerawada police.

Raju Dadaba Borge (44), a resident of Ulhasnagar, Thane in Mumbai, was convicted by the Kalyan court in 2000 for murdering his wife and three children.
The superintendent of prisons (open jail), Ramesh Kamble, told DNA, “Initially, Borge was lodged at Arthur Road Jail. He was transferred to the open jail in Yerawada in 2009 because of his good conduct. On Thursday, Borge was sent to work in the jail farm and he did not return in the evening. We looked for him in the nearby area before approaching the police,” he said.
Earlier, on May 23, 2011, another murder convict, Saleem Gulab Pathan (36), had escaped from the open jail. He is yet to be
re-arrested. Saleem hailed from Ratnagiri village in
Panhala taluka of Kolhapur district. In 2002, a
Pandharpur court had sentenced him to life imprisonment for murdering his wife.
3 chain-snatching incidents in 48 hrs
Jewellery valued at over Rs2.22 lakh was stolen in three chain-snatching
incidents reported in
different parts of the city in the last 48 hours.
The first incident was
reported on Thursday in Dhankavdi. Two unidentified men on a motorcycle snatched a gold chain valued at Rs1.12 lakh from Sunita
Rajendra Pagare (40), while she was walking near Kashinathnagar in the afternoon. The Sahakarnagar police are investigating the case.
Pagare is a resident of Tai Complex in Dhankavdi.
In the second incident, Manjula Hiralal Dave (74) was robbed of her gold chain valued at Rs50,000 by two unidentified men on motorcycle on Thursday afternoon. Dave, a resident of Premnagar, was going to shop when the incident took place. She has lodged a complaint with the Swargate police.
Later in the evening, a housewife, Rajni Arun Magar (48), was robbed of her gold chain valued at Rs60,000 by two unidentified men riding a motorcycle in Sant Tukaramnagar in Pimpri.
Employee booked for siphoning off money from firm
Nikhil Chandrakant Gawade (21), an employee of a company awarded the contract of depositing money in bank automated teller machines (ATMs), is alleged to have
siphoned off Rs18.54 lakh which he was to fill in ATMs of State Bank of India.
The incident came to light when Mukesh Nanelal
Samrat, branch manager of the company with which Nikhil works, lodged a first information report (FIR) at the Sahakarnagar police station. Samrat, in his complaint, said Nikhil siphoned off the money on various occasions since December 19.
According to the police, Gawade is a resident of Rajmudra Society at Dhankavdi and the office of the company he was working with is in Dhankavdi. Samrat said in his complaint that Gawade took money to fill up cash trays of ATM at Daund railway
station, Kedgaon, Yavat and Loni. However, he did not fill up the cash trays and instead submitted fake receipts to the company.
Police sub-inspector MS Funde of Sahakarnagar police station said, “The company officials noticed the fraud during an audit and decided to lodge a complaint with us.’’
PMC staffer, wife in ACB net
The state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Friday arrested Shankar Sitaram Mahapure, a supervisor at the water supply department of the Pune Municipal Corporation, and his wife Lata for possessing disproportionate assets.
During the investigation, the ACB found that the
couple had amassed assets valued at Rs28.33 lakh, and was in possession of an extra Rs2.33 lakh after all the
expenses.
According to the ACB, Shankar helped his wife
construct a building with the illegal money on a plot
gifted to them by a relative.
The duo was remanded in magisterial custody by the court of sessions judge SD Tulankar. However, they were granted bail on a personal bond of Rs15,000 each.
