Many principals, teachers and students of municipal schools said there has been a marked improvement in the cleanliness and upkeep of school toilet facilities.
They said the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has pulled up its socks and become sensitive to maintenance of school toilets following a series of articles published by DNA in July this year.
DNA’s articles had highlighted the poor condition of toilets in schools. Teachers, staff and students had admitted that they desist from visiting the untidy toilet blocks of their schools.
“We are now quite satisfied by the manner in which the toilets are being cleaned,” said a municipal school principal.
Chaitrali Kulkarni, a teacher from Anusuya Khillari School at Erandwane said, “The missing doors and taps in the toilets have been fixed and the places containing stagnant water have been cleaned. The broken tiles have also been fixed. Unclean toilets and urinals were a perennial problem at the school, but now with the new system of cleanliness, the toilets are clean and
stench-free.”
The faculty members of Deendayal Upadhaya Vidya Mandir in Erandwane also expressed satisfaction at the clean toilet facility.
Honerao Mahadev, the school’s Marathi medium principal (afternoon shift), said, “The toilets are cleaned twice a day, for the morning and afternoon shifts.”
However, he said the ward office is yet to clear one of the choked toilets and repair broken lids of chambers,
despite repeated complaints.
A Chhatrapati Sambhaji primary schoolteacher said the toilets in her school are cleaned thrice a day. “We are now maintaining a register to ensure that the sweepers regularly come to clean toilets. The school provides phenyl and bleaching powder for the purpose.”
