This year, there will be delay in the Ganesh immersion procedure because of bumpy roads.

Though the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has repaired roads along the main Ganesh immersion routes in city, most are not as smooth as required because of unskilled repairing and continuous rainfall since the past few days.

“This will surely cause delay in the immersion procedure on Sunday. The rough patches may also damage the idols. Our sentiments are attached to the Ganesh idols and cracks in them can create tension and hurt sentiments,” said Narendra Dahibavkar, president of Sarvajanik Ganeshotav Samanvay Samitit (SGSS).

The mass immersion will start on Sunday and it will go on still 6am on Monday. The festivities conclude with the immersion of the Lalbaugcha Raja idol. Each mandal has been given an immersion time, which if they fail to comply with, the police will charge them a fine of Rs5,000.

Dahibavkar said the BMC has attended to almost all bad patches, but the repairing work was done in a shoddy manner, leaving bumps on the roads. Trees along the immersion routes have not been pruned properly, which will create hurdles for idols placed on lorries.

“Therefore, it is not us who will be responsible for the delay, but the BMC. Why should we pay the fine for the corporation’s tardiness. We admit there will be huge pressure on the police to ensure immersions get over on time, as otherwise it causes traffic snarls the next day. The bomb blast in Delhi will add to the pressure,” he said, adding they will try to meet the given deadline.

Last year, the police had sent showcause notice to GSB Ganesh mandals for delay. But the mandal gave a satisfactory answer to the notice and no fine was charged.

In the backdrop of the recent bomb blasts in Mumbai and one in Delhi High Court premises, security has been beefed up near Ganesh mandals. More security personnel will be deployed during immersion.

“An identity card will be given to mandal volunteers. The mandal will not take more than one truck for immersion. While hiring a truck, it will be their responsibility to check the background of its driver,” said a senior police officer.
