The police's 'Jagrut Mumbaikar' campaign, aimed at creating aware and alert citizens, was relaunched today with actor Ajay Devgn as its brand ambassador.

City police and Eureka Forbes's joint initiative 'Jagrut Mumbaikar' (alert Mumbai citizen) is aimed at making citizens more alert and is an exercise by police who go door to door, to make every one aware of his surroundings and different facets of living a secure life in Mumbai, city police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said.

"We have pitched in actor Ajay Devgn as the campaign's brand ambassador since he is popular among people of all ages. Two-and-a-half-years ago, the campaign was launched when the cops approached schools, colleges and societies to increase alertness among the people," he said.

However, after the Mumbai terror attacks, it was felt that the campaign should be intensified by also reaching to slums, areas along the coastline, chawls, security agencies, auto rickshaw, taxi drivers and other public places, he said.

The 41-year-old actor said he was proud to be part of the campaign and described the city as one of the safest cities in the country.

"Because of the police, Mumbai is now one of the safest cities. We should co-operate with the police in all ways. By doing this we are helping ourselves. We should be alert and co-operate with the cops who can make Mumbai not only safest place in the country but also in the world," the producer appealed.

Devgn, who was recently seen playing gangster Sultan Mirza in Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, said "I feel the security has increased manifold post-26/11 and alertness among the people has also gone up."

People need to inform the police if they find anything suspicious, he said.

"I will tell my friends in Bollywood to fully support the campaign and be part of it," he said adding, "efforts being put by police are great. We have seen cops who scarified their lives."

According to Dayal, 15 bomb blast incidents occurred in the city since 1993 in which over 497 were killed and 2053 were injured. A slight alertness by citizens could avert any untoward incident, he added.
