People from Hindi-speaking communities of Delhi, UP and MP are far more open to the idea of inter-community marriages than their counterparts in Keralite, Bengali, Marathi and Gujarati communities, says a study done by a popular matrimonial website.
Also, people residing in their native states prefer to marry into their own communities compared to those settled elsewhere, says the study done by Jeevansathi.com. Also, people from MP seem to be most open to seeking partners from other communities, the study found.
According to the study, 33% of people from the Hindi-MP community initiated marriage contacts with Hindi speaking communities of Delhi and 20% contacted people from Hindi speaking communities of UP.
Also, although 86% of Bengalis, 57% of Punjabis and 81% of Gujaratis and Marathis initiated contacts within their own communities, interestingly the second choice for all these communities is Hindi-Delhi.
Commenting on the findings Vivek Khare, business head, Jeevansathi.com, said, “With changing times people are willing to get out of community boundaries and find someone with shared mindsets, but in most arranged marriages the choices are still community-centric. This is primarily because people from the same community share a high comfort level in terms of language, cultural values and traits.”
“The trend of inter-caste marriages is noticeable in young people,” added Sameer Mishra from personallifeatrimony.com.
However, when it comes to those living outside their home state, marriage preferences differ. The study found 84% Marathis living in Maharashtra contact people in their own community, but only 66% residing outside sought other Marathis. Similarly 81% of Gujaratis in Gujarat initiate contacts in their community as compared to 69% settled elsewhere. While 72% of Tamils in Tamil Nadu made contact in the Tamil community, only 59% of Tamilians residing outside Tamil Nadu contact those within the community.
