The LT Marg police have arrested a man who is part of a gang that dupes diamond traders and jewellers. The arrested person has been identified as Mohammad Kalim Nizamuddin Khan.

The gang would enter into a business agreement with the victim and then turn defaulters after making initial payments. The gang had allegedly duped a Kalbadevi-based jeweller to the tune of Rs2 crore. The police have also recovered Rs76 lakh worth stolen property from the accused.

According to the police, the complainant (name withheld) deals in diamonds ornaments and has an office in Kalbadevi. Two years ago, Khan’s associates, Rajendra Soni and Hemang Shukla met the complainant posing as businessmen and had entered a business agreement. The victim used to give them ornaments to sell on credit basis. Initially, the payments were made on time, but later Soni and Shukla defaulted payments. The victim lodged a case against the duo, police said.

“On receipt of specific information, Soni and Shukla were arrested last month and the investigations revealed that their associate Khan had kept the said ornaments with his local contact in Gujarat. Accordingly, we arrested Khan and the stolen ornaments worth Rs76 lakh were recovered,” said an officer from LT Marg police station.
