The BMC will now use BEST buses to spread awareness about how to deal with dogs and what should be done after a dog bite. The campaign is slated to start in a fortnight. The decision was taken after the BMC registered a rising number of dog bite cases last year.

Lieutenant colonel Dr JC Khanna, member of the Animal Welfare Board of India and of the BMC-appointed Dog Control and Management Monitoring Committee, said, “Along with the BMC, we will be starting a campaign to educate people on how to deal with dogs and dog bites. We selected BEST buses for the campaign, as they roam around the city and we can reach out to many people.”

Civic records say there were 77,000 cases of people being bitten by dogs and 18 deaths in 2009 alone. The city has seen more than 2.84 lakh dog bite cases and 112 deaths due to rabies in the last five years.
