In a reprieve to the owners of Bharatmata Theatre, the Maharashtra state monitoring committee on Tuesday directed the National Textile Corporation (NTC) to withdraw the eviction notice issued against the theatre.
The committee was formed under the chairmanship of retired justice VB Chauhan under the Development Control rules for monitoring and development of mill lands in the city.
The NTC had in 2002 issued an eviction notice against the over 70-year-old theatre which screens only Marathi movies, following which its owner Kapil Bhopatkar approached the city civil court.
The court, however, dismissed Bhopatkar’s appeal in January this year after which he filed an application before the state monitoring committee.
