Though the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) is content with its deadline of 2012 set for phase-I of Mumbai metro, the Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra)-led Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) seems determined to complete the project by July 2010.

Our deadline for them is 2012. Though the company has set a ambitious target of July 2010, we feel they should be able to run the metro by end of next year,” Mhaiskar said.
Work on the first phase of the metro line between Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar began in early 2008. MMRDA, which owns 26% stake in MMOPL, has set an official concession agreement of 35 years, with a construction period of five years beginning 2007.
RInfra believes the July 2010 deadline is achievable. “Our targeted schedule of 2010 has been worked out after incorporating all the local intricacies,” an MMOPL spokesperson said. “We are confident we will complete the Metro One project almost 21 months ahead of schedule, provided we get timely allocation of required lands and right of way from statutory agencies and civic authorities,” he said.
One of the critical areas of construction is the 183-m rail over bridge (RoB) which will take the metro line over the western railway. According to a top MMOPL official, the target to complete the bridge is May 31, 2010. Though he had earlier said that construction would take at least 12 to 15 months, he said the July 2010 deadline had already incorporated the time required to construct the bridge.
