Only higher values can lift human spirit and bring one closer to the supreme power, said Sunandaji, a well-known exponent of Vedanta during her discourse on Bhagavad Geeta on Tuesday.

The three-day discourse by Sunandaji on chapter 17 of the holy scripture started at Nehru Memorial Hall. Daughter and disciple of Swami Parthasarthy, she dwelt on shraddha (faith) during her discourse. The discourse is held from 6.30 pm onwards and will conclude on Friday.

She said you are what your shraddha is. “Your faith directs you. If you believe in high goals, worship high ideals, you have set your goal to go upwards in life,” she said.

Explaining that one’s faith depends on the individual’s nature, she said, “The satviks worship the higher self, the supreme power and they aim at divine goals, the rajasik worship demi-gods and their goals are terrestrial, while the tamasik worship ghosts and they pursue sensual pleasures.”

She added, “Many people have successful careers, wealth, fame, everything and yet are not happy because they confuse the means with the end. Wealth, knowledge, education, career are part of life. Without good values these possessions have no meaning.”

She said good values have to be adopted and practised in life. “Those who go on adding high values to life move upwards, while those with lower aims perish,” she added.
