Saturday saw the beginning of a rainy weekend and the wet spell for the city is not likely to end soon. The Met department has forecast heavy rains in Marathwada, central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa due to a low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal adjoining coastal Orissa and moving in north westerly direction. Parts of the city and suburbs are also likely to be on the receiving end of frequent spells of rainshowers.

“The low pressure area  moved towards a north-westerly direction and intensified into a well marked low pressure area. Today it lies over Vidarbha and adjoining areas. So, under its influence there will be major rainfall in north of Mumbai i.e. Thane and the south of Gujarat,” said R V Sharma, deputy director, MET.

There were also heavy rains in Nagpur and entire Vidarbha region  and visibility on roads  dropped to some extent. Flight operations at the Nagpur International Airport were also affected due to bad weather and poor visibility, airport sources said.

The Mumbai-Nagpur Indian flight was diverted to Hyderabad while a Delhi-Nagpur flight was diverted to Raipur. Other flights of Indigo, Jet Airways, Kingfisher were also affected. The Delhi-Nagpur flight diverted to Raipur was the first to land after the visibility improved followed by the Mumbai-Nagpur flight.
