Heavy rains lash Thane; minor girl washed away in floods

A 12-year-old girl was washed away in floods this morning as heavy rains lashed several parts of Thane district, disrupting normal life, officials said today.

The downpour, which started last night, continued this morning, inundating many low-lying areas, they said.

The District Emergency Control Room said the girl was washed away in floods in Dahanu taluka. The victim, Reena Yeshwant Mohankar had come down to Nanivali area for a visit.

Due to heavy rains and floods, the occupants of the house were shifting to a safer place when Reena fell in the water and was washed away. A search for her body was on, the officials said.

Meanwhile, the water level in various dams in the district witnessed a steep rise with two of them crossing the storage level and overflowing.
