Four suspects, all Nepalese nationals, have been detained by officers of the Matunga police station for allegedly robbing a jeweller couple and grievously injuring them, said police.

According to the police, Shantilal Dedhiya, 56, and Poornima, 52, who own three jewellery stores, in Mumbai were attacked and jewellery and valuables worth Rs50lakh were robbed.

The prime accused was the building’s watchman, Dhanshri, also a Nepali, who was hired on November 13 without the mandatory background checks and registering with the police. The Dedhiyas, along with their son and daughter-in-law, stay on a ground-floor flat at Purna Shanti Building, near VJTI.

“The building’s watchman had to go on leave. That’s when Dhanashri learnt about it and approached the Dedhiyas, requesting for a job. He was not registered with the police,” said Sunil Deshmukh, senior inspector, Matunga police station.

While Dedhiya is still under observation, Poornima is out of danger, the police said.
The police are also preparing sketches based on the description given by the victims and other residents. They are also inquiring with the locals to get more details into the case.

According to the police, around 7pm on Friday, Dedhiya’s son and daughter-in-law left for a wedding, while Shantilal and Poornima were alone at home. Around 9.30 am, the watchman rang the doorbell and Poornima answered the door. “Dhanshri asked her for milk coupons so that he could fetch a packet. Just as Poornima turned, six other persons, armed with knives and choppers, barged in and attacked the couple,’’ said Deshmukh.

Then, tying the two up, the robbers snatched away whatever jewellery Poornima was wearing and also a bag containing valuables. The loot included cash, two cellphones, gold and diamond necklaces, rings, chains and pendants, collectively worth Rs50 lakh.
