Former Shiv Sena MLA Sitaram Dalvi was left red faced, on Thursday, by the Bombay high court. Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice Mridula Bhatkar directed Dalvi to find out from his party “bosses” if they were ready to pay for the damages caused by their agitations. Dalvi has filed an application to obtain a stay on an order passed by the suburban collector directing him to pay Rs7.80 lakhs as fine for vandalising the Hotel Intercontinental, Sahar, in January 2009.
“You could have approached the Sena chief (Bal Thackeray) and other senior leaders before coming to us,” remarked Justice Desai.
Observing that a political party should stand by its supporters and party workers, the court asked Dalvi to get in touch with the party chief and check if the party would pay the money.
“Ask your party bosses, if they are ready to pay the amount till the petition is finally decided. The payment will be subject to final outcome of the petition,” the judges observed.
The court will now pass an order on Dalvi’s application, on Friday, after going through his reply. However, advocate Shriram Kulkarni, appearing for Dalvi, argued that his client was singled out as other wrongdoers haven’t been punished. Around 500 Shiv Sainiks had caused damage to the Hotel Intercontinental, Sahar, while protesting over labour-related issues in January last year.
Hearing the submissions made by Kulkarni, the court even orally observed, if Dalvi had ended his relations with Shiv Sena or if he had any such plans. Kulkarni, however, informed the court that he had no such instructions from his client.
