With elections of 10 municipal corporations and 27 zilla parishads around the corner, the Election Commission (EC) is making all efforts to enroll maximum number of voters, especially those who just turned 18.

As part of the campaign, the EC asked University of Mumbai to fuel its drive in 650 colleges and enroll around 6.5 lakh students.
In a letter dated October 13, the EC has asked the university to ensure all colleges encourage students to get voter ID cards and register themselves before November 1 to be able to vote in the election to 37 local bodies in February-March 2012. This is the first time that the EC roped in colleges to get first-time voters. “We have asked other universities of the state to help in the campaign,” said state election commissioner Neela Satyanarayan.
On October 1, a month-long campaign 'Be a Voter' was launched.

An initiative of Election Commission of India, the campaign aims to register as many voters as possible. The university put up the circular on its website about the campaign on October 17. Most colleges were unaware of the circular. Colleges are closed for Diwali from October 22 to November 14.

“I haven't got the circular. Usually, the university staff calls us over phone but we didn't get any call,” said BB Sharma, Vaze College principal. Principal of SK Somaiya College Sangeeta Kohli said:  “We didn't get any hard copy.”
Principal of KC College Manju Nichani said, “I’ve circulated it and our teachers explained to students about the importance of voting.”

University registrar Murlidhar Kurhade was unavailable for comment.
