It wasn’t a wild guess by the police, but one of Nooriya Haveliwala’s own friends who told the police that she may have also consumed drugs.

A day after she tested positive for cannabis and morphine, a senior police officer said it was one of Nooriya’s friends who hinted about her drug use.

However, questions are now being raised about why the police didn’t bother to take blood and urine samples of Nooriya’s friends, particularly those who were with her before the accident on January 30, in which a police officer and a biker were run over.
The police, on Thursday, claimed they would be questioning Nooriya’s friends to find out their involvement in consumption and supply of narcotic substances.

Soon after the accident, the police had called Sabiha Patel and Varun Tolani for questioning, but let them off.

A police officer said they can still send nail and hair samples of Haveliwala’s friends for chemical analysis. “If we suspect their involvement, we can send their samples to determine if they had also consumed drugs,” the officer said. Police had sent the samples of Haveliwala’s hair and nails to be on the safe side as there were chances of drug components getting diluted in the blood.

“With time, these components get diluted in the blood and urine. Inorganic metallic compounds can stay for months in nails and hair, but it is difficult to find out. After a point of time this is the only way to find out if somebody had consumed drugs,” explained former director of Kalina Forensic Laboratory Dr Rukmani Krishnamurthy.
