A domestic servant, who had stolen gold jewellery and valuables from his employer’s house, thought he had managed a fool-proof crime.

But little did he reckon that a CCTV camera installed in the building premises would ultimately lead the investigators to him.
On Friday, the police arrested Deepak Singh alias Kartik Das, 20, the maid servant, and Tapan Quila, 26, for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs54 lakh from Gopal Gorwani, 61, a Khar-based builder's residence.

The theft took place on April 25 when Gorwani and his family had gone to watch the IPL match at Andheri Sports Complex.

During investigation, the watchman of the complex told the police that he had seen Singh leave the house in the night with a bag.
The police then learnt that Singh's real name was Kartik Das and he was involved in a case of housebreaking in Khar in 2007.

"We also traced his village to Midnapore in West Bengal," said Amitabh Gupta, additional commissioner of police, West region.
The police have recovered Rs2.5 lakh in cash and valuables worth Rs49 lakh from the duo.
