“I Kanishk Singh, 28, take thee, Farrah Ann Dsouza, 28, as my lawful wife,” read the marriage registration form signed by the couple at 10.15am on Saturday at the marriage registration office in Bandra.

Though quite a special moment for both Kanishk and Farrah, it was not the time that made their marriage special. It was the date.

Considered to be one among the four luckiest dates this year, many couples had blocked 01-01-11 as their date of marriage one month in advance. As a result, both registration offices in Bandra and Fort recorded double the number of marriages registrations on the day, as compared to other days.

“Usually, we register five to six marriages in a day, but today we witnessed fourteen couples taking legal sanction for their sacred bond. In fact, the registration office in town leapt ahead by registering 15 marriages. All the couples and their families just couldn’t stop talking about how their marriage had become even more memorable due to the 01/01/11 factor,” said Mohan Ramachandra Jadhav, marriage officer of the Bandra registration office.

However, the craze was not just limited to getting married on the said date but also to being the first ones to do so. The lucky couples were Kanishk and Farrah at Bandra and Dilip Koli and Vandana Tare at the Fort branch. But trailing behind hardly deterred the excitement of the remaining couples.

“We’ve been dating the past five years and there couldn’t have been a better day to get married. We chose a memorable date to help our memorable relationship reach its desired destination,” said a clearly excited Disha, who married Abdul Rahim. The newlyweds are now occupied with preparations for the reception due in a few days.

While many had planned the event, there were also some who got lucky by sheer coincidence, like 30-year-old Prashant Ram. “We just picked this date since it was a Saturday and it would be convenient for us to request our witnesses to be present,” said Prashant who married Zaelle Marie Carboneid, a French national.

“There is no reason for prospective couples who missed their chance today to lose heart because the year 2011 is generous and has gifted similar opportunities of three more dates on 11/01/11, 01/11/11, 11/11/11. I would suggest they immediately block the dates and we shall be happy to serve them,” said a smiling Jadhav.
