The ragging incident at the Naigaum hostel of Seth GS Medical College came to light as one of the victims was the son of an officer of the state anti-terrorism squad (ATS).

Last Saturday, lectures got over early because the annual day function was scheduled to take place at Shirodkar Hall in Parel in the evening. Using the spare time, the seniors who resided in the Naigaum hostel invited juniors to come and “freshen up” before heading for the event.

Ten juniors who agreed to tag along were allegedly ragged in the room of one of the interns. The juniors were allegedly asked to strip and enact sexual positions. The ATS officer’s son informed his father. According to a source, the officer reached the hostel with his colleagues and stopped the ragging. He also informed the Bhoiwada police station and the college authorities.

A hosteller claimed that the policemen who reached the spot beat up the seniors. But KEM Hospital dean Sanjay Oak denied this.
Meanwhile, the anti-ragging committee of the medical college, which has initiated stringent action against the 18 medical students accused of ragging their juniors, decided not to fine them because that would amount to punishing their parents.

Under the guidelines of the Supreme Court, the committee can slap a fine of anywhere from Rs25,000 to Rs1 lakh on students who are found to be involved in ragging.

But one of the 20 members on the committee said, “These are all students. Their parents would have ended up shelling out the fine. So we chose other punishments.”

The anti-ragging committee, which was formed in June 2009, had made it mandatory for students and their parents to sign a bond every year that the former would not get involved in ragging. The bond also makes it incumbent upon a student to inform the college authorities if he/she comes across a case of ragging on the premises. Posters to this effect were also put up on the college and hostel premises.
