AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s outspokenness on the north Indian migrants issue seems to have deeply upset the Congress-NCP government. They fear it is a political blunder that could push the sagging Shiv Sena back into the mainstream.
At a public rally in Patna on Monday, Rahul Gandhi had said, “On 26/11, north Indians (NSG) saved Mumbai. If terrorists have to be fought, let Biharis live in Mumbai.”

The Sena described Rahul’s remarks as an insult to the Maharashtrian 26/11 martyrs.

Tuesday was marked by high tensions as Congress-NCP reckoned if Sena and MNS took to the streets, things could spiral out of control, jeopardising the positions of both Ashok Chavan and RR Patil. Signs of nervousness were visible as Chavan set aside his administrative work to personally contain the negative outcome of Rahul’s remarks at home.

Chavan held frantic parleys with state Congress leaders on ways to contain the damage and ensure there would be no law and order problems.

Rahul Gandhi’s February 5 tour of Mumbai has been curtailed from six to two functions at Bhaidas Hall and Ramabai Nagar. Till late night there was question mark on his tour as leaders said a clearer picture would emerge only after the home department report came.

MRCC chief Kripashankar Singh said, “The SPG were to visit the spots chosen for his rally. The home ministry was directed to provide reports if it was safe to allow Rahul’s visit.” Hoping to mitigate tensions, Chavan said, “Rahulji meant that we should rise above regional prejudice and work as Indians. He was speaking for the entire country.
