An American fugitive, wanted by the US authorities for allegedly cheating a bank of more than $300,000 was apprehended at the Mumbai international airport on the basis of an Interpol red corner notice against him. According to the CBI, one of the nodal authorities in the 188-member Interpol, it handed over the accused to the Sahar police station for further action. It has further alerted American authorities.
"We have arrested him on the basis of a red corner notice issued against him last year. He was travelling with forged documents and an expired passport,” said a senior official of the Interpol division of the CBI.
CBI official said that Dan Boayke Agyenm, 56, facing an Interpol red corner notice in the country since July 7, 2009, was arrested on the night of January 22 after he flew in from Ghana on an expired passport. According to the notice issued by US authorities, the accused is wanted for an alleged fraud of over $3,00,000. He is accused of having withdrawn money out of counterfeit cheques which were submitted for clearance in the Californian branch of a US bank.
Agyenm had mentioned his occupation as “attorney” and also carried a US passport which had expired on December 30, 2010. Sources in the Interpol added that an arrest warrant against him was issued by a Californian Court on September 20, 2007 and if convicted, Agyenm could face a maximum of 30 years of imprisonment.
Immediately after his arrest, the US embassy in Delhi was informed and American authorities have initiated the process of collecting the necessary papers for extradition.
