Business acumen is not something one would associate with 16-year-olds. But noted IT entrepreneur and author Subroto Bagchi begs to differ. And it is this belief that has stirred him enough to write a book on ‘Business for 16-year-olds’.

Bagchi feels that the impressions about business that young minds are developing come largely from films and media. “I felt the need to make teenagers understand the power of business in nation building. We can’t let youngsters think of business as a path to fulfill their material needs. That’s when the idea of the book struck,” said Bagchi. He was speaking at a book reading session of The Professional organised by the Business Development Bureau’s Book Club in the city on Tuesday.

Bagchi has spent the last four weekends with 16-year-olds in Bangalore. The programme, called ‘Business with Bagchi’ was co-created with three national public school branches in Bengaluru. “By interacting with 31 youngsters, I tried to get into their mind space, and it has been an interesting experience,” said Bagchi.

Elaborating on this concept on his blog, Bagchi writes, “The deal with me was that they (the children) would let me into their world and in turn, I would tell them all about business. Over the four weekend sessions, we spoke about entrepreneurship, social sector enterprises, supply chain, brands and a whole host of other business concepts. Finally we spoke about the role of ethics in business. During the process, they learnt about techniques like brain storming, did group work to present their learning and even ate pizza. It was fascinating how perceptive and articulate they were.”

Meanwhile, Bagchi’s popular book, The Professional, has been selected by Penguin Books for an international release. “This book was written for an Indian audience so I was surprised when Penguin chose it for the international market. But I realised that issues like integrity and professionalism are universal. Over the last few months I have nuanced the content for an international audience,” said Bagchi.

The Professional is based on Bagchi’s lifelong experience of what it takes to be a professional. He asks and gives answers about integrity, conduct and professionalism.
