Family members of police inspector Arun Borude, who was found lying dead on the railway track in Shrirampur on Wednesday, took his body home for last rites on Thursday evening after a video-graphed autopsy.

While the police investigation swings between accident and suicide, his family feels that his death could be a murder. “He was a strong person and it is highly unlikely that he would commit suicide,” said Borude’s brother Prakash.

Borude, a former encounter specialist, was charged with raping a minor and had been on the run since November 1 after an FIR was filed against him.

His death, however, has led his family to believe that those who got him framed in the rape case would have perhaps wanted him eliminated.

“Assuming that Borude would have gone to trial for the offence and got an acquittal from the court, those after his life may have thought that he would get back at them and it was better to get rid of him,”
said Borude’s advocate Naveen Chomal.

He said that Borude stood a good chance of being acquitted as there was insufficient evidence against him.

Chomal said the family would file an application in the court in the next few days seeking a judicial inquiry into Borude’s death. On Thursday, the family had demanded a video-graphed autopsy and two samples of his DNA.

Also, the injuries on his body could not have happened from a rail accident, Chomal said.

“The fatal injury was at the back of his head and there was a minor injury on his shoulder,” he said. “Also, the spot where Borude’s body was found was nowhere close to where he lived and there was no reason for him to be there.”

On December 20, the Bombay high court had rejected Borude’s anticipatory bail application and the police had filed a charge sheet against him on Wednesday.
