A 58-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by jumping off the terrace of a seven-storey building in Andheri (West).

Mina Vasant Shah, who lived alone in a chawl on the Veera Desai Road, Andheri (W), owned a flat on the third floor and a shop in a building opposite her residence. Her husband had died around 10 years ago and her daughter lives in her marital home in Andheri (West).

The police said around 8.15am on Sunday, Shah went to the terrace of the building and jumped off, landing on a bike parked on the ground floor. The watchman and other shopkeepers rushed to the spot hearing a loud thud. They informed Shah’s relatives, who stay nearby, and the police. Shah left a suicide note, holding no one responsible for her act.

Sub-inspector Irfan Sheik of the Amboli police station said the body was taken to the Cooper Hospital for a post-mortem, after which it was handed over to Shah’s family.

Shah’s niece Toral Rajbhoj said, “The area where my aunt resides has been taken up for redevelopment. So, she was going to shift to her flat opposite the chawl. In fact, she told us that she would be shifting on Sunday and we heard in the morning that she jumped off the building.”

Rajbhoj claimed that Shah was not going through a financial crunch, but suffered from a few illnesses like ulcer.

“That could be a reason that made her commit suicide,” suggested another relative, Ravi Rajbhoj.
