Ajit Wadekar to receive Mother Teresa Award for 2010

Ajit Wadekar, who led the Indian cricket team to historic Test series triumphs in West Indies and England in 1971, will be conferred with the Mother Teresa Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2010.

The 68-year-old former India skipper, whose name will forever be linked to the twin away triumphs that marked a new chapter in the country's cricket history, has been picked to receive the award on April 10 by the Mother Teresa International Awards Committee, according to a letter from the panel.

Other notable winners of the award, instituted in 2000-01, include late PM Rajiv Gandhi (posthumously), late Bengal chief minister and CPM stalwart Jyoti Basu and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to the letter.

Mother Teresa International awards are presented to eminent personalities who have excelled in the fields of education, science, culture, music, sports, social work, medicine, industry and politics, both at home and overseas.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards are presented to "eminent personalities in India and abroad who have practically served
mankind in their own capacity during their long life," the letter stated.
