Inspector general Sanjay Barve, who was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Adarsh Society scam, has reportedly told interrogators that he sourced Rs30 lakh from the deposit of a flat which he rented in Kandivli.

However, CBI officials are finding it difficult to believe the claim, as flats in that part of the northern suburbs do not command such a deposit amount. They will now be going through transaction records of the contract on which the flat was leased on rent.

Barve’s father was allotted a flat in the infamous Adarsh Society building, for which he reportedly paid Rs70 lakh. Out of this, around Rs45 lakh was reportedly transferred to him from the joint account of Barve’s wife Sharmila. The couple was questioned for over nine hours on Tuesday.

It is alleged that Barve’s father was allotted flat in lieu of the ‘favour’ allowing the thinning of width of Captain Prakash Pethe Marg, a part of which was then included in Adarsh Society. Barve, who is presently posted at Maharashtra Police Academy, Nashik, was not available for comment.
