Former Indian Idol, singer Abhijeet Sawant, 28, joined the Shiv Sena and is likely to be fielded as the party’s Assembly candidate from a constituency in Mahim. The singer claimed that he is not interested in politics but wants to get attached to a youth force and represent them through the party.

Announcing Sawant’s formal enrollment as a party worker, Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray said the party has not yet decided on the responsibility to be given to the singer. He said there was no pre-condition from Sawant’s side, while the singer himself said since “every person born in Maharashtra is a Shiv Sainik”, he could not have thought of any other party when joining politics.

While  denying charges that he is entering politics because his career as a singer is not taking off, Sawant said: “I have achieved in a span of 4 years, what other newcomers take 10 years to achieve. Entering politics is taking a responsibility that can’t be compared with a singing career.” He  added that his campaigning for Congress candidate Sanjay Nirupam in the recent Lok Sabha elections was in a personal capacity.

Sources from the party said that Abhijit is likely to be fielded from the Dharavi constituency. The party has been repeatedly defeated in the constituency by the Congress candidates. The Sena has also clarified that inactive party MLAs will be thrown out of the fray in this Assembly elections. Uddhav Thackeray said: “Our talks with our ally, the BJP, is almost finalised and we may have swapping on many seats considering the equations have changed after delimitation and reservations.” He also added that the right of choosing the chief ministerial candidate lies wholly with Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

However, in a separate press conference on Saturday, BJP general secretary Gopinath Munde announced that the seat-sharing formula will remain the same between both parties. “Seat-sharing talks between both the parties are in the last stages, and the earlier seat-sharing ratio will continue this time too. The alliance will be between two parties and there is no question of including the MNS,” said Munde.
