Swine flu, that had all but receded from short-term public memory, reared its ugly head again recently, claiming a victim in Bhayandar on Wednesday.

Sambhaji Panpatte, deputy commissioner of Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), said the victim, Rekha Kirtikumar Shah, 52, was a resident of Bhayandar.

On the morning of June 16, Shah had woken up with a fever. By noon, she had become serious and was rushed to Hinduja Hospital in critical condition.

Even before doctors could figure out that her symptoms were those of swine flu, Rekha breathed her last on Wednesday night. In her death report doctors have said that she died from swine flu.

Accordingly, MBMC has also issued a death certificate stating that she had swine flu.

“We have taken her death seriously and are keeping a close eye on her family members. We have also distributed Tamiflu tablets to her family and kept one isolated ward ready at Bhagwati Hospital in case of an emergency,” Panpatte said. Civic staff has also distributed Tamiflu tablets in Shah’s building and in the area.
Panpatte added that MBMC had also made arrangements for swine flu doses from Pune, which was badly hit by swine flu.
