Within 24 hours after swine flu killed a 48-year-old woman from Tandulwadi village in Baramati Taluka at Sahyadri Hospital on Wednesday, the deadly H1N1 virus snuffed out the life of a 51-year-old man from Katraj, who had been admitted to Bharati Hospital, on Thursday.

Hospital dean, Dr Vivek Saoji, said that the patient who had been on ventilator for 8 days died of multiple organ failure. “He had no known pre-existing conditions. However, he was admitted late and was straightaway put on a ventilator. Prior to admission at our hospital, he was at a smaller nursing home and had also been taking treatment from a family physician for a couple of days,” said Dr Saoji.

He said that the death should serve as a cautionary note for people to start on anti-swine flu medication at an early stage.

Meanwhile, a 58-year-old woman who tested positive for H1N1 virus, has been put on ventilator support taking the number of patients in critical condition to 6 since March 5.

The five other patients include a 30-year-old woman at Aditya Birla Hospital, a 55-year-old woman at Thergaon’s Global Hospital, a 24-year-old woman at KEM hospital, a 48-year-old woman at Sahyadri Hospital and a 41-year-old man at Prayag Hospital.

Five more people tested positive for H1N1 infection on Thursday making it a total of 27 H1N1 positive patients in Pune since March 5.
