Four persons, including three brothers were arrested by the officers of Antop Hill police station for allegedly raping a married woman and setting her ablaze at her Sion Koliwada residence on Monday evening.
“The police arrested Rajesh Devender, 30, Kumar Devender, 28, Nitya Devender, 36, and Shankar Mudliyar, 24 for gang rape and murder,” said Sanjay Baviskar, deputy commissioner of police (zone-IV). They were remanded in police custody till September 25.
Nitya, an accused was in love with Nadiya, 25, the victim, four years ago, said Baviskar. Nadiya’s parents had refused their marriage as Nitya was jobless. Nadiya got married to Raju Swami Devender, a BMC labourer and a taxi driver. The couple has two children.
According to the police, Nitya and his accomplices found Nadiya alone in her house at Gharkul Ashirwad housing co-operative housing society and barged in by around 6.30 pm. They locked her house, started torturing and abusing her and raped her repeatedly.
The victim however mustered courage and threatened to file a complaint against them. This provoked the accused, who took kerosene from her kitchen, poured it over her, set her ablaze and left the place, said Baviskar.
The deceased’s younger sister Merry Reddy, 22, who visited her, found Nadiya on the floor with burns. She informed her parents residing in Makkawadi at Antop Hill, who took her to Sion Hospital for medication.
Nadiya gave the names of the three Devender brothers and Shankar Mudliyar who raped and burnt her. Based on her statement, the four were arrested. She succumbed to her burns later at night.
