Allegedly depressed over failing for the second time in his seventh grade exams, an 11-year-old boy committed suicide at Oshiwara on Wednesday.

Shamz Merchant, a student of Janaki Devi Public School in Versova, hanged himself from the ceiling fan using a nylon rope at his Jogeshwari home around 1pm. This was around the same time his mother had gone to the school to attend the ‘open house day’, where the parents were handed over the result sheets of their children.

“Prima facie, it appears that his failure to be successful in the exams could have triggered the suicide. We are exploring other angles as well,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.
According to the police, Merchant was with his grandmother at home when his mother went to the school to collect his results.

Around lunch time, he asked for food. While his grandmother was away in the kitchen, Merchant rushed to the bedroom and hanged himself. The police have not recovered any suicide note.

“As soon as his mother received the results, she called up home. That is when she got to know that Merchant had committed suicide,” said the police officer. Some relatives, along with a couple of neighbours, rushed Merchant to the hospital. However, he was declared dead before admission.

Neighbours whose statements were recorded by the police said that Merchant was a happy and jovial boy and was never pressurised to perform well academically.

The police are recording the statements of Merchant’s school teachers to find out about his conduct. They are also talking to his friends to find out if there was any change in his behaviour.
Neighbours who were preparing to celebrate the birthday of a resident on Thursday cancelled their plans following the incident.
The distraught family, who were still coming to terms with the loss, refused to speak to the media.
