The overall SSC result of Mumbai and Maharashtra has come down this year. The overall pass percentage of freshers in city has dipped to 91.90 from 92.90. From Mumbai, 3,23,955 freshers took the exam and 2,97,719 passed.

However, secretary of Mumbai division board SY Chandekar said, "I don't see much difference in our result compared to last year's. It's good and almost the same."

It seems this year students have benefitted from sports grace marks, a practice the education department started for those who participated in sports at the state level.

And this year a state level rifle shooter, Tanya Wadkar of Kalsulkar English School from Sindhudurg, has secured 100% result. "My sport helped me to improve my concentration for the studies. I give credit to my teachers and parents for my success. My best score is of Sanskrit (99). I have secured 485/500 in 'best of five' subjects, and 15 marks of my sport helped me clinch the 100% result. I wish to be an IAS officer," she said.

Her father Ramchandra is a head clerk in ST buses in Sindhudurg, and mother Kamini is a housewife. Tanya always preferred to study in the mornings and, after studies, gave one hour to shooting practise. The last match she participated in was in Amravati in November. Tanya said, "I didn't take a break from my sport as it relaxed me. My parents too didn't pressure me to stop practising and participating in it. But I did stay away from mobile phone for the whole year."

After Tanya is Swarali Chodnekar who secured 99%. From VN Sule School of IES Hindu colony, Chodnekar too is into rifle shooting as well as fencing and has participated at the district and state level. "I am not surprised with the result as I have won 187 prizes. I have scored 99 in most subjects," she said.

She has also won prizes in creative writing and drawing, classical singing, and excellence in academics. Chodnekar bagged Rs10 lakh in 2012 in Igenius scholarship, standing first among 4.6 lakh students across India.

Among the boys, St Joseph High School, Vikhroli, student Sharan Shetty secured 98.20%. He gave credit to his coaching class as well as school teachers for his success. "My parents always motivated and guided me during my exam preparations. I never gave up sports and used to participate in martial arts. I would like to pursue my career in mechanical engineering and, hence, will go into science stream. I believe it is not about how much you study but how much you learn," said Shetty, whose best score is in science and technology (98).
