Active Thane residents who started the `no toll, before poll' campaign during ganeshotsav are now back with another intensive drive. It is to sensitize Thanekars about the importance of yellow line and to alert them not to pay toll in case the traffic reaches beyond the yellow line.

From October 15, members of Thane citizen foundation (TCF) which has over 150 major housing societies of Thane as its members will start an intense awareness drive at all the four toll nakas that lead to and from Thane. "We will start from Anandnagar toll naka which is a major toll collection center. Two of our volunteers will stand at the naka - one to make the public aware about not to pay toll if traffic crosses the yellow line. Whereas, the second person will monitor the traffic and alert the toll center person not to collect toll once the traffic crosses yellow line," says Kasber Augustine, convenor, TCF.

Thanekars are welcome to join this movement and volunteer for the activity. All they have to do is send a mail to TCF, volunteer can devote their time and their services will be enlisted accordingly. "Special t-shirts and placards with slogans like `once yellow line is crossed, please go,' etc will be worn by our volunteers at the toll naka to make it easy for us to spread our message," Augustine says.

In the month of July Thane's guardian minister Eknath Shinde had assured that no toll will be collected from all the toll nakas in the state once the traffic crosses yellow line. "But this is not followed diligently as many people are unaware about it," he says.

There are four toll nakas in Thane where while entering vehicles need to pay toll. These are at Anandnagar, Kharegaon (Kalwa), Mulund west and Airoli. Out of these Anandnagar, Airoli and Kharegaon are major toll collection centers. Last month, Shinde announced that no toll should be collected from motorists during peak hours at Kharegaon. This was to regulate the traffic chaos on Thane roads that had resulted due to traffic diversion in lieu of shutdown of Versova bridge.

"This is a movement of a non-political group of people from Thane who are fed up of toll which creates congestion and pollution," he says.
