On the eve of World Day Against Child Labour, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) wants its schools to raise awareness among their students and the local community about the violation of child rights.

The CBSE issued a circular to all its schools on Friday to create awareness about child labour among their students. The schools have been given a few pointers, such as setting practical goals for students to promote the eradication of child labour in their community and making them gather relevant data for reports and photographic evidence, with the report reflecting analysis, deeper understanding of the issues involved and constructive action taken by the school to sustain the project. The board has instructed schools to form teams of 10-15 students and involve students from classes VI-X under the supervision of a teacher or counsellor.

The schools have been told to organise skits scripted and performed by students on the theme of human rights and social justice for child workers, with child labour in the supply chain as another theme that was suggested. Yet another suggestion is that students, through their schools, start and sustain a literacy project inside or outside the school premises for child workers, where the latter can receive tuitions and opportunities for skills development.

The schools have been asked to expand such a project if they already have one.

The projects would be evaluated by experts appointed by the board. They would be marked on points such as students' involvement, sustainability/impact of the project/skit, tangible outcomes and overall quality. The board has also asked school heads to give wide publicity to their school's projects in order to create awareness about this issue.

Raj Aloni, principal, Ramsheth Thakur School, said: "Our students are very enthusiastic and we will definitely participate in creating awareness about child labour among our students."
