The Indian Information Service (IIS) officer of 1990 batch, Dhamendra Jai Narain, on Tuesday took over as director of Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

Interacting with the media after assuming charge, he said, “FTII is a hub of creativity and I am a bureaucrat with a creative mind. It will help melt the ice. There is a huge responsibility on me as a father figure of the institute. As I am still in the process of getting to know the institute, I can only offer relentless pursuit and efforts to achieve the defined targets.”

He promised to get some good actors and directors to come to the institute.

“Although there are many challenges, as an experienced bureaucrat I am sure I will be able to do a good job,” he said.

A known name in the field of music, theatre, films and publishing, Narain is the front person and lead singer-cum-composer of renowned pop and rock band ‘The Aryans’.

He has five popular albums, more than 800 concerts and numerous awards to his credit, besides being associated with film production for many years.

He studied at IIT, Kanpur and was associated with Pathfinders Lintas before joining the civil services in 1990. He has also served as a professor of mass communication at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi.

In the past year, he has been involved in direction and staging of Jamunia, a 2-hour mega-theatrical production with 10 songs with a cast and crew of about 150. After it received a good response, the Centre has decided to adopt it in more than 10 languages. In order to complete this task, Narain would continue to hold additional charge of officer on special duty (OSD) in New Delhi.

“Jamunia will be adapted in Marathi as well. There are plans to make a film on it,” he said. Narain has also authored a coffee-table book, Soldiering On, a saga of the Indian armed forces in the last century.
