Jamurat Yadav, 55, and her daughter Renu Yadav (22) who drowned in a well in Vile Parle on Tuesday night while performing a ritual for the long lives of their children were firm believers. They had never missed observing the Jiudaya puja.

Jamurat, who had been living in Mumbai for a decade, lost her husband a few years ago. According to her family members, she and Renu would observe austerities frequently for the well-being of their family.

"Ironically, the ritual my mother performed on Tuesday for the long life of all of us ended her own," said Jamurat's son Vijay Yadav. "When I got the news at work, I hoped she and my sister, Renu, were among the survivors. Now I am trying to accept this fate."

Divya Yadav, a three-year-old child who had accompanied her mother, Vandana, for the ritual, also did not survive. "One moment she was with me, the next she was gone," said Vandana, 23, a resident of the same building as Jamurat's.

She was holding a eight-month-old boy in her arms when the incident happened.

"Divya was by my wife's side. After the puja, the prasad was being distributed and she climbed onto the slab. That's when it went down," said Chandresh, the young girl's father. "I could tell my wife about Divya's death only in the morning."

Her grandfather, Achchelal Yadav, who drives an auto-rickshaw for a living, said, "Divya was my first grandchild and was very smart. She was going to start school this year. She had even picked up some Marathi from our neighbours."

It was Achchelal who brought the body home.

CM urged for help

After meeting Achchelal Yadav, grandfather of Divya who died in the incident, Congressman Kripashankar Singh  said: “I have requested the collector to request the Chief Minister to help the victims financially on humanitarian grounds.” Local MLA Parag Alavani offered condolences to victims’ families.
