In some good news for commuters using suburban locals as well as long-distance trains in and around Mumbai, it has been revealed that on an average, the railway police manage to solve half of the cases registered with them. The bad news is that the railway cops, no thanks to the massive and porous railway system, manage to recover just about 25 % (in value terms) of the stolen booty.

Statistics made available to dna by the Mumbai railway police commissionerate show that between January and December 2015, property worth Rs11.75 crore was stolen from commuters by way of chain and bag snatching, pickpocketing, and so on. The recovery in the same period stood at Rs3.09 crore, or about 26%.

Between January and May this year, property worth Rs3.8 crore was stolen and the cops recovered items worth Rs90.86 lakh, or about 24%.

In terms of solving the cases, cops fared much better. While 3,285 cases were registered under various heads of theft in 2015, the railway cops managed to solve 1,632 cases, or about 50% of all cases. The figures for the period up to May this year stood at 1,291 cases registered and 630 detected, or about 49% of all cases.

Most cases pertained to pickpocketing. In 2015, a total of 1,449 cases of pickpocketing were registered, in which commuters lost items worth Rs2.52 crore. Railway cops managed to solve about 65% of these cases, but recovered only 48% of the money.

This year till May, 533 cases of pickpocketing were registered and commuters lost valuables worth Rs93.38 lakh. Cops managed to uncover 62% of these cases, and 44% valuables were recovered.

Far tougher is the fate of those commuters who lost their belongings in long-distance trains and stations. Of the Rs75 lakh lost between January and May this year, only 16% booty was recovered. In 2015, commuters lost a whopping Rs4.4 crore in bag-lifting cases. Cops managed to recover Rs93 lakh, or about 21% of the money lost.
