The National Investigating Agency (NIA) on Wednesday filed a voluminous charge sheet against Areeb Majeed, a suspected member of the terror organisation Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), almost seven months after his arrest. The charge sheet was filed before the special NIA court presided over by judge Yatin D Shinde. Majeed was charge-sheeted under three sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and one section of the Indian Penal Code.

The charge sheet has also named other three youths — Saleem Tanki, Fahad Sheikh and Aman Tandel — as wanted accused in the case. It was learned from reliable sources that the charge sheet has a list of 86 documents, which the agency has attached, along with 17 call data records. Also attached are the forensic reports from the Kalina and Hyderabad labs on his seized mobile phones. The agency had seized 46 articles from Majeed, including US and Turket currency.

Sources said the agency, in its investigation report, claimed, "He had downloaded quite a lot of literature. It was then that he decided to join the banned organisation in order to go to Syria and started searching for ways to do it. The social networking site helped him get contacts of other youths who shared his interest. He came across Sheikh, who told him that he is handling a page named Magnet Gas which Majeed should join. Majeed and the other three wanted accused started meeting frequently and managed to collect Rs2,39,500 to buy tickets to Iraq."

The synopsis of the charge sheet said after the four reached Baghdad, they came across a tour guide, who first took them to a religious place called Sanitary of Darga Shariff Abdul Kadri Gilani. They then bought an Iraqi SIM card and got in touch with Rehman Daulati, an Afghani, and Abu Fatima, an Iraqi. The youths were then taken to the war zone.

Majeed claimed that when he was in the war zone between August and October 2014, he was injured thrice, of which two were bullet injuries, while the third was because of an air attack by the US.

"Finally, he planned to return to India and approached the Indian Embassy in Turkey. He pleaded with them to help him return, claiming that he had lost his passport and that his case should be considered on an emergency basis. On November 26, 2014, he tried to sneak his way back by trying to get onto a Turkish Airlines flight but was apprehended at the airport," the charge sheet said.

It added that the agency is checking records of Facebook, WhatsApp, Skype and Tango, which the accused had used as a medium in the crime.
