Residents around an under construction building in Borivali were left aghast when they saw its basement float on water on Wednesday morning. The residents immediately called up the fire brigade, the police and the civic ward only to find out that it was apparently the 'raft foundation' which came floating due to the pressure created by the water below it.

When residents noticed a block-like structure of nearly 300x400 ft emerging from a pit dug up for the construction of a building at Chikuwadi in the Shimpoli area, it became a matter of huge curiosity for them. When the authorities were informed about the matter, Kishore Gandhi, assistant commissioner of R-Central ward, immediately summoned the developer.

"The developer's consultant explained that this was the raft foundation which was not like the conventional piling foundations. Raft foundation technology is being used in several new high-rises. These are block-like structures which are hollow inside and are built one over the other at least 30-35 feet below the ground for the basement of buildings. The level of the structure is even below the sea-level," said a senior civic official.

As an immediate measure, the civic staff has punctured the basement block from all four sides so that water enters into its hollow space and it sinks on its own for now. BMC has asked the developer to explain the incident.

"We have asked the developer to direct his technical and consulting staff to explain the mishap. Once they submit a technical report, we will send it to the building proposals department and to Director of Engineering Services. They will scrutinise the report and give their decisions. We will take action on that feedback," said Gandhi.
