Dadar's famous fish market will soon be shifted to the suburbs. The decision in this regard has been taken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) following complaints about traffic hurdles, a foul stench and nuisance on the main road of Senapati Bapat Marg.

Municipal markets and fish markets in Mumbai are an integral part of the city. Most of it's municipal markets are in need of urgent repair. Snehal Ambekar, the Mayor of Mumbai — along with leader of the House Trushna Vishwasrao and the BMC's standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse — had visited a few markets in the city and discussed in detail issues such as cleanliness and repairs needed in the markets with Yamini Jadhav, the chairperson of BMC's markets and gardens committee, and additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh.

"The BMC is planning to shift the fish market at Maa Saheb Meenatai Thakare market, near the Dadar flower market. The civic body has chosen five-six places, including Vikhroli and Chembur (as alternative options). Of these, Chembur seems the most favourable place as of now," said a civic official.

Ambelkar asked civic officials to repair all the markets and replace the broken sheds at fish markets. She has also asked the civic administration to clean the markets twice a day and keep the toilets there clean, apart from building toilets for women and ensuring that the area is clean.
