It’s certainly not a fail-proof solution
Although it will reduce the load on domestic power requirement of the city, it isn’t quite the solution. Solar panels take more time to generate power, so they can take care of minor power requirements, but not those places which require more electricity. People need to understand that they are the solution. If each of us starts reducing consumption, the power crisis will stabilise a lot faster than by any other means.

Surely a step ahead in tackling the issue
Solar panels might not be the solution to all our energy problems. But they are surely a step forward in tackling the issue and to overcome the shortage of conventional electricity sources like hydroelectricity, nuclear, thermal and wind power. Power requirement of the megapolis is expanding at an alarming rate. The city needs an alternative means to overcome the power shortage faced by few areas.

Will help in easing pressure
The city is facing unprecedented power shortage and the authorities need to make policies so that the situation doesn’t deteriorate. Solar power is the best alternative and if all new buildings have it, then the pressure will definitely decrease. Apart from this, people too need to become conscious and do their bit to save electricity in small ways if possible; only then can there be a viable and long lasting solution.

Levy penalties on defaulters
This initiative is a great way to start. Solar panels are expensive to set up, so the entire cost shouldn’t be passed on to the buyers by private developers. If existing buildings fail to implement the measures, the civic administration should mull over application of higher water and property charges. Also, the power that these buildings generate should be harvested so that any surplus goes to the bigger grid.

Situation outside Mumbai is terrible
Solar panels will help since there won’t be many power cuts, that we are currently facing. In the townships like Dombivli, Kalyan and Navi Mumbai outside the main city, the situation is appalling. There are eight-hour-long power cuts and load shedding. Even if the timeframe gets reduced by two hours, it will make life easy and people will be relieved. We need to save energy by switching off household appliances.
