Remember the rolly-polly protagonist of the hit animation movie Kung Fu Panda? In the movie, his master tells him:

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift. That is why it is called ‘present’.” Dr Sunita Simon, consultant psychiatrist at St John’s Hospital, told the same thing to the audience at a seminar on corporate stress on Monday.

‘Suicide Capital’ is one of the monikers Bangalore has earned. Psychiatrists attribute it to loneliness, as a big part of the city’s population comprises a young, migrant population—students and employees of multinational companies.

Acknowledging this, the Medico-Pastoral Association (MPA) chose ‘De-stressing in Today’s World’ as the theme for this year’s Mental Health Day, with emphasis on the corporate employee.

“Stress is a part of our lives and a lot of times, it even motivates us to change. But this is when we deal with it in a healthy manner,” said Dr Simon, adding that, “prayer or meditation, participating in pleasurable activities and unwinding with friends do help fight stress.”

She said forgiveness too can help in relieving stress. “When you continuously think over insults, it adds to your stress. Forgiving someone for something they said or did… it helps you let go.”

K Dinesh, co-founder of Infosys, believes that when it comes to stress among corporate employees, a lot has to do with how a person deals with the situations at the workplace.

“There is a lot of stress when a person is unable to respect himself, because of lack of values or conflict of values. Any person needs to first establish what his values are and stand up for these values,” he said, adding that an important role is played by the employer too in promoting stress-free environment.

With greater independence, people also tend to cut off from people around them, added Dinesh, recalling an instance when an employee did not even know when his roommate was sick.

“Difficulties in working with people can add to stress. We need to build healthy, friendly relationships among the people we work with,” he said.
