The problem of garbage disposal in the city due to agitation of villagers of Uruli and Fursungi may be over on Sunday after the intervention of MP Supriya Sule on Saturday.

Residents of Uruli and Fursungi have blocked the entry of garbage vans from the city to the Uruli garbage depot for last four days as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has not allegedly kept promises of garbage processing and development works. Heaps of garbage are lying in the city at various locations causing possible health hazards. Against this background, Sule visited the site on Saturday and talked to villagers about their problems.

Sule told DNA that she had a meeting with agitating villagers on Saturday. There would be another meeting on Sunday morning in the presence of senior officers. “I will try to solve the problem,’’
she said.

Deputy sarpanch of Fursungi Sanjay Harpale said that villagers informed Sule about their problems. Local residents have lost faith in the civic officials and they want Sule’s assurance about development works.

He said that villagers expect that they would get written assurances in Sunday’s meeting in Sule’s presence and then they would decide about withdrawing the agitation.

He said the meeting on Sunday is likely to be attended by Sule, mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak, district collector Vikas Deshmukh, regional officer of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Pundalik Mirashi and other senior officers.

Meanwhile, deputy municipal commissioner Suresh Jagtap said about two thousand tonnesof garbage is lying in the city due to the
agitation.

He said that on Saturday that the PMC disposed off about 1,000 tonnes of garbage by supplying it to farmers for manure and also to two processing firms engaged in biotechnology.
