Anyone who belongs to Mumbai, regardless of how long, is sure to have witnessed or/and participated in the classic ‘South Mumbai (or SoBo as it is called) versus suburbs’ spat — something as inevitable and intense as the ‘my city best’ argument that explodes when a Delhiite and Mumbaikar are put against each other.

But did you know that this debate has now extended its dimensions and unfolded itself with a great aplomb on the net world?

Twitterattis are constantly commenting and taking a dig at each other as they post sarcastic and nasty comments at ‘Townie girls’, ‘Lokhandwala dudes’ and ‘Bandra girls’ etc. The remarks are highly dipped in sarcasm and mockery.

And they go like this — ‘So Townie girls think that Kandivali and Borivali are mountain ranges like the Aravalis’; ‘Townie girls think that Churchgate station is that building opposite to the cake shop Gaylords’; ‘why did a Townie girl break up with her Bandra boyfriend? Coz she could not handle a long distance relationship’; ‘the only Qawali Townie girls know of is Roberto Cavalli’ and so on.

Next in popularity are the Lokhandwala dudes. ‘Lokhandwala dude introduces himself and the gives the name of his gym’ is a common satire on the micro blogging site. Also picked up upon the most are the Bandra girls, with common comments like ‘They have an accent way more anglicised than the firings you see shopping in Colaba’. “It is just one of another twitter drama… an out-an-out mockery,” asserts psychologist Richa Shastri.

“As long as it is in good humour and doesn’t turn dirty, it’s hardly a bother and more of an entertainment. The net has become such a playground that everyone and anyone is going out there and doing/writing anything they wish,” she adds.

Beena Parmar, a 23-year-old media professional, stays in Borivali and feels extremely charged up each time a town-suburb quarrel comes up.

“What’s the point of posting it all out on Twitter? How is that fun or funny anyway,” she says. While Anuj, a college goer, finds it extremely amusing. “Oh I check out all these jokes regularly. Such fun it is!”
