The scene is set for the Mumbai Wine Tasting Festival supported by DNA. The first of its kind in the city, the festival offers a vast variety from Indian and imported wineries including Sula Vineyards, Reveilo, Zampa, Vin & Voulior, Maizma, Indus Vineyards, Vallone Vineyards, York Winery, Vinsura Vineyards, Kaira Wines, Good Earth Winery, Chateau d’Ohri, Ralph Craven, Pause, Four Seasons, Aspri Spirts, Sultania Trade, UB Spirits, Wine Park and Howling Wolves Group for the wine enthusiasts.

Although the festival centres around all aspects of wine tasting, the Bar B-Festival — India’s largest cookout, offering a wide selection of barbecued meats, seafood and veggies, a karaoke session and live music by Muzik Machine will attract a fare share of food and music lovers respectively.

Ad guru, gastronome and wine connoisseur Prahlad Kakkar who will be inaugurating the event today says, “About 10 years ago, the average Indian wine drinker did not know the difference between a French and an Australian wine. Today, Indian wines have come a long way.” He pauses to point out that there is still a long way to go, but the gap can be bridged with additional aid from the government. With numerous wineries participating, what Kakkar is personally looking forward to at the festival is “learning,” He laughs, adding, “When it comes to life and food, there is never enough to learn.”

Also at the two-day festival are a series of events which aim at imparting to wine enthusiasts all the knowledge possible to becoming successful snooty wine connoisseurs. Wine appreciation classes will be conducted twice a day on both days. Complementing the wine appreciation classes, will be talks on wine glasses — after all, one must know which goblet to serve this elixir in.

But what will really help you raise an eyebrow is placing in front of your guests a special
selection of cheeses to go with the wines — a feat which organisers are hoping to help out
with through a cheese tasting session in which Gouda, Edam, Cheddar, Emmental and Feta to name a few will be offered along with valuable titbits of information on wine and cheese pairing.
