UK-based designer Christian Blanken, who’s going to be showcasing at the Signature Premier World of 8 in Bangalore soon, talks about what inspires him and his fashion philosophy…

You’re showcasing in India for the first time — could you tell us a bit about the collection you’ll be showing at the Signature Premier World of 8 international fashion tour?
I am going to showcase an amalgamation of the best pieces from the Fall-Winter 2011 collection that is currently in the stores. I am also going to be showing a few designs from my Spring Summer 2012 collection.

You’re also doing something with Swarovski crystals in your collection — could you please explain a little about that?
This is the first time I will be working with Swarovski elements in my collection. So naturally, I am quite excited to be featuring the lead crystals for ornamentation in my design work. I think embellishments such as these add another level of glamour and sophistication to the garments.

Your designs are extremely linear in cuts; in fact, you go by the philosophy of simplicity. Do you think that’s the future of fashion?
I am not sure if that is the future of fashion, but that is certainly my philosophy. I really like stripping garments of clothing down to their essence; capturing it, analysing it and then reworking them to be the most beautiful and functional garments they can be.

What are some of your favourite fabrics to work with, and why?
I work mostly with leather, shearling, fine tailoring and coating fabrics as well as silk and jerseys of many different kinds.

Do you think the Signature fashion tour will give you the opportunity to see how Indians perceive international fashion?
I certainly hope so. I think it’s an amazing initiative by Signature Premier and wish more countries would award international designers the opportunities to showcase their work in this way and increase people’s awareness of what an incredibly powerful and important global industry fashion really is.
