Veteran theatre and film actress, Sulabha Deshpande, has stressed the need to promote children’s theatre in the country saying, “It is the only place where children can open up and find their hidden talent.’’

She was speaking at the Tanveer Sanman function held in the city on Thursday, in which both she and upcoming actress Veena Jamkar were awarded the Tanveer Sanman and Tanveer Natyadharmi awards respectively by Roopvedh Pratishthan.

The awards have been instituted in the name of actors Shreeram and Deepa Lagoo’s son, Tanveer, who died in a train accident in 1994. This was the seventh edition of the awards, given each year to personalities who have excelled in the field of theatre.

Deshpande relived her childhood and her journey as an actress in theatre and films. She said children’s theatre was important because “our children have no time to understand themselves and their talents.”

Chief guest Nana Patekar  complimented the two actresses and said he was happy to be a part of the Avishkar theatre group with them.
